Boost The Energy Transition Challenge

In collaboration with the Stichting Zeeuwse Publieke Belangen, we are launching the Boost The Energy Transition challenge. The energy transition is facing significant challenges. While both the demand for and supply of electricity are increasing, we are experiencing grid congestion, the first major stumbling block.

Challenge question: How can we, within two years, demonstrate through innovative projects and pilots in Zeeland that we can utilize and integrate the various energy networks in a much smarter way, with the goal of accelerating the energy transition?

Boost the energy transition

The Goal

The second stumbling block comes from studies. These studies indicate that electricity can only constitute up to 50% of the future energy mix. Therefore, it is important to accelerate the development of a climate-neutral gas and heat network in the Netherlands, alongside the electricity network.

With innovative projects and pilots in Zeeland, we aim to demonstrate within two years that we can deploy energy networks more efficiently and in an integrated manner, thus accelerating the energy transition.

The energy system of the future is a balanced, green mix of electricity, molecular resources (e.g., hydrogen or biogas), and heat, along with energy storage and/or conversion to ensure there is always enough for everyone.

DESIRED SOLUTION DIRECTIONS:

  • Influencing the demand side.
  • Adjusting the supply side.
  • Balancing supply and demand.
  • Influencing the transport side (the energy networks).
  • Conversion and storage.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Entrepreneurs, cooperatives, research institutions, SMEs, ad hoc consortia, collectives, and others who:

  • Are actively involved in implementation.
  • Also invest themselves.
  • Come up with innovative solutions and projects.

SZPB CRITERIA:

  • Promotion of the energy transition in Zeeland.
  • Support from the province, municipalities, and grid operators.
  • Reproducibility and scalability.
  • Social character and promotion of cooperation.
  • Innovative for the Zeeland energy system.

WHAT WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR:

  • Solutions focused on the import/export of energy, infrastructure expansion, adjustments in legislation or regulations, or financial solutions for existing activities, acceleration of procedures, or those with government control as a theme (e.g., spatial planning).
  • Participants who have completely outsourced the project to a third party and do not play an active role, or participants who are trying to finance an unprofitable business case or an unprofitable peak of an already existing activity.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?

The challenge program offers guidance, a network, and financing. Interested parties are invited for a meeting to explore the potential match. Upon a positive match, an elaboration and development program follows, which may lead to a fund application at the Stichting Zeeuwse Publieke Belangen. Participants can receive between €50,000 and €250,000 in financing.
