In collaboration with Dockwize, Yara challenges companies and experts to come up with solutions for two of their challenges. Challenges that they have already partly taken on, but without the desired result. Do you think you know how it can succeed? Then many doors will open for you.
YARA, a global fertilizer producer, wanted to reduce the visible dust released during the bulk loading of fertilizer onto ships to zero. This problem occurred not only at the 10 loading points on the quay of their Sluiskil production site but also at 25 other factories within the YARA group.
Goal of the challenge
YARA aimed for improved working conditions and wanted residents near the production site to no longer be bothered by the swirling dust released during the loading of ships. In addition, the company wanted to continue operating within the strict permit requirements and further limit the amount of nitrogen in wastewater without creating additional waste streams.
Sought: innovative solutions
The ideal participant in this challenge was an expert in dust reduction with experience in large-scale bulk product loading. The solution had to be practical, easily implementable, and in line with European guidelines and YARA’s current processes.
What did YARA offer participants?
Selected participants gained access to YARA’s specialists, testing facilities, and labs. Development budget was available for the implementation of the solution. Successful results could lead to additional assignments at other processes and factories of YARA and other companies in similar industries.
Registration and selection
Registration for the challenge is no longer possible as it has been completed. Selected candidates participated in the Challenge Weeks to come to an innovation contract with YARA.
Program 2021
The challenge program consisted of various sessions during which participants developed and optimized their concepts and plans. The closing event with the announcement of the winners took place on April 29th.
Results of the challenge
The Yara Dust-free loading challenge has two winners: Brian de Rijcke from De Regt Conveyor Systems bv from Biervliet and Alex Budding from TBK-GROUP Spillage Control from Renswoude. Both submitted plans that prevent dust formation. Because their ideas complemented each other, a joint winner was chosen.
Rules and conditions
Participation in this challenge meant that participants agreed to the rules and conditions, including cooperation under a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and meeting YARA’s vendor selection criteria and the European Union’s guidelines.

During this innovation event, the focus is entirely on the theme of energy transition. Professionals, experts, and stakeholders are taken on a vibrant program full of inspiring keynotes and demos from ambitious entrepreneurs and will actively work on the energy transition during various ‘Get Unlocked Experiences’ in and around Dockwize.
During a grand finale, we will announce the results of the Boost the Grid challenge. In this challenge, 6 participants will still be in the race with an innovative solution for the grid congestion issue. During the final on June 15th, the project applications that will be supported by the Zeeuwse Publieke Belangen Foundation.
